PHiSH returns tonight.
By Brad Ball on 3.6.2009 @ 9:45 AM. Filed under Music
Today is the day we have been waiting 5 years for. Tonight, at roughly 7:30PM, in the holy ground that is Hampton, VA, PHiSH will take the stage once more. For many of us, Phish is more than just a band, and seeing them play is more than just going to a concert. We grew up with Phish. They are intertwined with our very being, having had a large part in molding and shaping us into the people we are today. We have grown up a lot since the music fell silent. For me personally much has changed. I've gotten married, bought a house, started a career,  and had a baby (well, I didn't HAVE the baby of course). It's been a long time, but now it's time to get back on the train.

There has been much excitement since October when these shows were announced, and lots of speculation as well. The last time the band came back from their "hiatus", it was clear that something was missing. Like a basketball team that loses to the worst team in it's league when favored by nearly 20 points, we all knew that the intensity, focus, and drive were not there. Then there were troubles for some members during this off period that were well documented. But those obstacles were overcome, and the individuals that make up Phish emerged, seemingly stronger, fresher, and more vibrant than they've been in a long time. Rumors started swirling, and excitement started to build. Can they be the Phish of old? Will they be able to take us to new heights and then plunge us into deep valleys in an instant like they did before?

These questions have been building as much as the anticipation of these shows. And yesterday, many questions were answered, in a New York Times article, that finally put many of us over the top, leaving us as sleepless as an 8 year old on Christmas Eve.

Alas, most of us don't have tickets and won't be there in Hampton as the lights dim, and our favorite band takes the stage. But fear not! Options are plentiful to play along at home!

www.phish.com will be posting the setlist from the shows as they unfold.

www.phishthoughts.com/nospoilers will be posting each set in it's entirety (as one large downloadable file) within an hour or so of the shows ending.

www.livephish.com will be mixing the soundboard copies of the shows overnight, making them available for download (for FREE!!!) the next morning after each show.

Tonight is the night we've been waiting on for five years. It's finally here. Set the gearshift for the High gear of your sole. It's time to run like an antelope, out of control!!!
Phish tells Ticketmaster, "Eat my shorts!"

TicketBastard

You probably know by now that Phish has announced the first set of dates for their Summer '09 tour (Hooray!!!).  After nearly 5 years, seeing our favorite band hit the road again is a welcome site. When you look at the realeased tourdates though, you might notice some obvious omissions. Some of the staples of summer tours gone by are nowhere to be found in the current tourdates. Darien, PA? Star Lake? Why isn't the band hitting these familiar and favorite locations this time around?

Well it appears that Phish (and their fans) have had enough with Ticketmaster and their outrageous service fees and ticket scalping practices. Ticketmaster recently launched a sister website, TicketsNow.com. The site is marketed as a place where you can buy/sell tickets to events that are sold out. Being run by Ticketmaster, the buyer can be confident that they will get a real, valid ticket for the $500 they plunk down for a back row seat to see Bob Seager. But recently, tickets for some events have been showing up on TicketsNow BEFORE they go onsale through ticketmaster. What Gives? That's more than a little shady.

So, the phish band has taken matters into their own hands. For the summer 09 tour, no tickets will be available through ticketmaster. Instead, Phish will use LiveNation to make tickets available to fans, in addition to their usual mailorder (I guess it should be called weborder these days) system. I for one say THANK YOU! Ticketmaster represents all that is corrupt and evil in this world. Their monopoly on the ticketing industry has made them greedy and arrogant, and it's about time that somone has stepped up to take on Goliath.

I'll admit I have no idea what LiveNation is all about, and maybe it'll go over like a lead zeppelin. But, I applaud them for taking on TicketMaster, and I applaud the phish band for taking a chance on them and putting ticketbastard in their place.

Behind the scenes with Phish

Hey Now!

If you've never seen this before, you absolutely MUST check it out if you are a fan of the PHiSH band. In 1994, Phish hired the guy from Blueground Undergrass to go with them on their fall tour, and teach them how to play traditional bluegrass in their "spare time". He brought a video camera and documented the whole thing. The video is now available to watch on YouTube. There are 9 10 minute videos. They show the band practicing, with page on upright bass, mike on banjo, and fishman on mandolin. Lots of footage from back stage at shows and on the tour bus in the middle of the night between shows and such. I think my favorite part is one scene on the tour bus, and Trey is in the middle of writing My Sweet One. Really Really cool stuff. A side of the band that you've NEVER seen before
